Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

Your body requires very little vitamin b12 or cobalamin and most of us get sufficient quantities of it in our normal meals to satisfy our daily requirements. Although it's rare to see vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms it can still be useful to be able to recognise them just in case.

You're most vulnerable to vitamin b12 deficiency if you've vegan and don't use the available dietary supplements containing vitamin b12. Infants breast-feeding from vegan mothers can also be at risk. Vitamin b12 supplements are generally regarded as safe because there are few known adverse effects of overdose.

\"balance Diet\"

The main symptom that arises from vitamin b12 deficiency is a type of anemia that causes you to feel tired, weak and lethargic. You might also feel nauseous, constipated and become very flatulent (gas). You may also lose your appetite and suffer weight loss.

Vitamin B12 Deficiency Symptoms

More severe cases can give vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms, which include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Insomnia
  • Loss of memory
  • Dizziness
  • Lack of balance
  • Depression
  • Digestive problems
  • Dizziness
  • Liver enlargement
  • Eye problems
  • Headaches
  • Hallucinations
  • Inflamed tongue
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Loss of memory
  • Palpitations
  • Neurological damage
  • Tinitus or ringing in the ears

Vitamin b12 is commonly found in animal products like eggs, dairy, fish, meat and animal organs. B12 is rarely found in vegetables, which is why vegetarians and especially vegans who don't eat dairy products or meat, are especially at risk. If you fall into this category then you should consider using vitamin supplements containing b12.

It's also important to realise that the operation of vitamin b12 is dependent on sufficient quantities of other vitamins being present in your body so you should take care to get a balanced diet to avoid vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms.

Summary:
Your body requires very little vitamin b12 or cobalamin and most of us get sufficient quantities of it in our normal meals to satisfy our daily requirements. Although it's rare to see vitamin b12 deficiency symptoms it can still be useful to be able to recognise them just in case.

Fancy Rats - What Do Pet Rats Eat?

When it comes to their diet, rats are a lot like people: They'll eat almost anything. These omnivorous rodents can eat anything from grains, fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy products, and even chocolate. However, that doesn't mean you can feed your rats whatever you had for dinner and expect them to be healthy.

It's best to feed your rat a staple diet consisting of high quality lab blocks such as Harlan Teklad. Lab blocks are a nutritionally complete food for rats. However, rats also benefit greatly from the antioxidants and vitamins found fresh fruits and vegetables. Their diet should consist of 80% lab blocks and 20% fruits and vegetables.

\"balance Diet\"

Unfortunately, most rat food sold at pet stores isn't very good. Pet store block food usually has too much protein and unhealthy fillers. As for store-bought seed mixes, they won't give your rats a balanced diet. Rats have a tendency to pick out their favorite bits and leave the rest, resulting in a lot of waste and an unbalanced diet.

Fancy Rats - What Do Pet Rats Eat?

Your best bet is to find places online to buy high quality lab blocks. Harlan Teklad 2014 lab blocks are best, and can be found at places such as www.thecraftyrat.com or www.theratshop.com. Another option would be the lab blocks made by Mazuri, which you can order straight from the company's site. For grown rats, the best Mazuri formula is Mazuri Rodent Breeder 6F.

In addition to lab blocks and fresh fruits and veggies, you can feed your rats the occasional treat. Rats love yogurt drops, cooked chicken, scrambled eggs, and hardboiled eggs. A chip of dark chocolate is also OK as a very rare treat; in fact, chocolate can temporarily relieve respiratory distress in rats, so it's good to have around as a first aid remedy. Just be sure to limit these treats. Like humans, rats don't benefit from a high fat, high sugar diet.

Improperly fed rats will often get fat, sickly, or suffer from skin problems. Feeding your rats a balanced diet will help them live longer, healthier lives.

IVF Implantation Help With Food

In general, doctors agree that once you hit the implantation part of your IVF cycle, there isn't much that you can do to make things go your way. If your embryo is healthy and your womb is ready, you'll get pregnant, but if not, you won't. However, acupuncturists and other natural therapists seem to agree that certain foods actually can help with IVF implantation in different ways. There are different foods that are recommended for help with implantation, but walnuts, pineapples, and yams are some of the most common. While the scientific evidence behind these claims isn't too concrete, there is plenty of evidence from everyday people who have used these foods to increase their chances of getting pregnant through IVF.

Walnuts, Why Not?

\"balance Diet\"

Most nuts have high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids, which are helpful in treating infertility in general. In fact, in ancient Greek mythology, the walnut was actually tied to fertility in many ways, and it was used in fertility rites. The healthy fats in walnuts help boost sex hormones, and they can also help regulate the menstrual cycle. Walnuts also have a ton of other vitamins and minerals in them, so they can help boost fertility and your chances of implantation.

IVF Implantation Help With Food

While we aren't exactly sure why walnuts help implantation rates, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that they do. Some people think that it's the omega 3 fatty acids and the B vitamins in walnuts that help the egg implant itself in the womb.

Pineapple - A Controversial Helper

Many women and acupuncturists swear by pineapple's ability to help with implantation. For one thing, the bromelain in pineapple, which is a nutrient that it contains in higher concentration than pretty much every other food, is said to be an anti-inflammatory and also to increase cervical mucus. The increase in cervical mucus can make the uterus more "sticky," which can lead to increased rates of implantation. The most bromelain in the pineapple is found near the core, so many acupuncturists and natural therapists recommend eating the whole pineapple including the core.

One thing to note, though, is that there is also some evidence that pineapple juice in high quantities can cause cramps and can even cause spontaneous abortion. There's pretty much no danger of this if you eat just a cup of actual pineapple each day - which will be less concentrated than the juice squeezed out of the pulp. Just be sure that you keep things in balance and don't overdo it.

Yams for Fertility

Here's an interesting fertility fact: the Ibeji tribe in Nigeria eats yams pretty much every day, and they have the highest rate of fraternal twins in the world. Wild yams - not to be confused with North American sweet potatoes, which are sometimes called yams - have chemicals in them similar to estrogen and progesterone. They can help a woman produce more eggs during her cycle, which is one reason the Ibeji tribe has such a high incidence of twins, and they can also help with implantation by boosting a woman's levels of progesterone in her first trimester.

Eating a Balanced Diet

While all of these foods have been shown to help with implantation during IVF, the most important thing that you can do is to eat a healthy, balanced diet on a regular basis. Keeping your body healthy is essential to keeping your uterus and embryo healthy. Eat plenty of brightly-colored fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and get your three servings of full-fat milk products a day. Plus, you should participate in healthy but low-impact exercises like yoga and qigong, both of which have been shown to boost IVF success rates.

7 Essential Nutrients

There are 7 essential nutrients that sustain human life. Here is a list of those 7 nutrients and what roll they play in your body, and in your life. Here is how or where you can get these 7 essential nutrients.

1) Water - is the body most basic need. With out water you would die in just a few days. It is important not to ignore your thirst. You should never try to reduce your fluid intake, you should actually try to drink the recommended 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water everyday. It is even more important if you are trying to lose weight. Plus by drinking that much water, it is very good for your skin, and can make you look younger.

\"balance Diet\"

2) Carbohydrates - provides fuel to meet energy needs. Complex carbohydrates, or starches, are found in many plant foods such as grains, potato's and rice. Carbohydrates should be 55 to 60 percent of your diet.

7 Essential Nutrients

3) Protein - made up of amino acids, is essential for the growth and maintenance of body tissue, blood cells, hormones and enzymes. The best source of protein is meat, poultry, fish, milk products, and eggs. Vegetables, grains, fruits, legumes, seeds and nuts contain lesser amounts. Ten to 15 percent of your daily calorie intake should be from protein.

4) Fiber - is indigestible carbohydrate and is very important for general health. There are two types insoluble and soluble. Insoluble fiber acids in the digestive process: it can help prevent hemorrhoids and may also protect against cancer of the lower bowl. Sources include brown rice, brain, whole grain cereals and broccoli. Soluble fiber is thought to help reduce cholesterol and thus reduce the risk of heart and arterial disease It is found in oats, peas, beans, root vegetables, and citrus fruits. Recommended intake of fiber is 20g to 35g per day from different sources.

5) Fat - is essential as an energy store, to insulate the body against rapid heat loss, help produce hormones, cushion vital organs suck as the liver and kidneys, and aid in the absorption of certain vitamins. Fat should represent no more than 30 percent of the diet, but many people eat more. There are two main types of fat: saturated (predominant fat in vegetable oils). Fried and sugary foods that are high in saturated fat should be avoided, as they offer little nutritional value. On the other hand, unsaturated fats, especially the monounsaturated fat in olive oil, may help protect against heart disease.

6) Vitamins - are organic compounds, essential for body growth, function, maintenance and repair. They are categorized into two groups, water soluble and fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins including the B complex group and vitamins C, need to be replenished daily because they are not stored in the bodies tissue. Fat soluble vitamins, including A, D, E, and K, are stored by the body for long-periods of time, and so excessive intake may be harmful, a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and cereals should provide all the vitamins that the body needs.

7) Minerals - are essential inorganic compounds that aid energy production and body maintenance as well as assisting in the control of body reactions and reflexes. There are three groups; macro minerals, electrolytes (a subgroup of macromineral), and micro, or trace, elements. The macromineral, calcium magnesium, and required n larger amounts. The body needs trace minerals - chromium cooper, fluoride, iodine, iron magnesium and, molybdenum, selenium, sulfur, and zinc - in minuscule amounts. A diet that includes a wide range of animals and plant goods should provide all the minerals essential for health.

An essential nutrient is a nutrient required for normal body functioning that cannot be synthesized by the body and thus must be obtained from a dietary source. Some categories of essential nutrients include vitamins, dietary minerals, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids.

Treatment of Scurvy

Scurvy (N.Lat scorbutus) is a deficiency disease, caused by lack of vitamin C, which is required for collagen (an element of normal tissues) synthesis in humans. The chemical name of vitamin C is ascorbic acid, which is derived from the Latin name of scurvy, scorbutus. Vitamin C is found mainly in fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly citrus fruits such as oranges, olives, lemon, sweet lemon. Reduction in intake of Vitamin C rich food products, leads to scurvy.

History of the disease:

\"balance Diet\"

Scurvy historically affected mostly those nations, which were dependent more on military power. During military campaigns and long ocean voyages, food consumed by the ship crewmembers largely lacked in fresh fruits and vegetables, thus causing inadequacy of Vitamin C and leading to outbreak of scurvy epidemics.

Treatment of Scurvy

The first clue to the treatment of scurvy occurred during Jacques Cartier's arrival in Newfoundland in 1536, when he was advised by the native Indians to give his crewmembers, who were dying from this epidemic, a potion made from spruce tree needles. The foliage, rich in vitamin C, cured most members of Cartier's crew.

What are the symptoms of scurvy?

Symptoms of Scurvy include one or any of the following -

o Swollen, blackened and bleeding gums with loosened teeth.

o Soreness and stiffness of the joints and lower extremities

o Bleeding under the skin and in deep tissues

o Anaemia

o Wounds that don't heal, and scar tissue from old wounds dissolve causing reopening of wounds

o Tiredness and weakness, along with muscle cramps

o Appearance of tiny red blood-blisters to large purplish blemishes on the skin of the legs.

Who are more at risk of contracting Scurvy?

Scurvy is common in persons who follow a very restricted diet especially lacking in ascorbic acid, or who are under extreme physiological stress or are chronic alcoholics. Infants can also develop scurvy if they are devoid of mother's milk, and switched to top-up milk, without providing sufficient Vitamin C supplements. Babies of mothers who take extremely high doses of vitamin C during pregnancy may also develop infantile scurvy.

Treatment for Scurvy:

Increase in intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, especially citrus fruits are necessary to treat scurvy. Additionally, adults need to consume around 300-1,000 mg of ascorbic acid per day and 50mg/day in case of infants to effectively treat the disease.

Since the body does not produce vitamin C, it must be obtained from fruits and vegetables. Some excellent sources of vitamin C are oranges, olives, guava, green peppers, watermelon, papaya, strawberry, kiwi fruit, mango, honey, mango powder, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, and citrus juices or juices fortified with Vitamin C.

Amla or the Indian gooseberry is one of the richest sources of Vitamin C, whether fresh or the dried, powdered form.

Raw and cooked leafy greens (turnip, spinach), red and green peppers, fresh tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple are also rich sources of Vitamin C.

Vitamin C is sensitive to light, air, and heat, so it is best to eat fruits and vegetables raw, or minimally cooked in order to retain their full vitamin C content.

Treatment of Scurvy with vitamin C is usually successful, if the deficiency is recognized early enough. If left untreated, the condition can even cause death.

Preventive diet for Scurvy:

For Infants -

The most important factor in the prevention and treatment of scurvy is proper feeding of mother's milk, atleast for the initial six months. After birth, all children should preferable be breast-fed because it is pure and fresh and contains most of the nutrients necessary for the growth and development of the baby. If, for any reason, it is not possible to breast-feed the baby, then cow's milk or commercially available milk should be supplemented with vitamin C.

For Adults

A well balanced diet plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of scurvy in adults. The patient should take a well-balanced diet consisting of grains, seeds, nuts, fresh vegetables and fruit. This diet should always be supplemented with milk, eggs, fruits and honey.

Recommended Vitamin C intake:

Scurvy is rare in countries where intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is more. The Vitamin C present in them acts as important antioxidant, thus enhancing the development of connective tissues, lipid and vitamin metabolism, immune function and wound healing.

Currently, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin C is

o For adults: 50-60 mg/day;

o For infants: 35 mg/day;

o For pregnant women: 100 mg/day

o Lactating mothers: 150 mg/day

However, requirement for vitamin C increases when a person is under stress, smoking, or under some medication.

Although rare, but scurvy remains a malaise condition that is still prevalent in the pediatric population, especially among certain groups with unusual eating habits. A heightened awareness towards intake of Vitamin C rich foods is required to prevent a potentially fatal, but easily curable disease.
Thus, take the suggestion - "An orange a day keeps scurvy away."

A Balanced Diet - The Key Nutritional Components

The importance of a balanced diet for a normal functioning human being cannot be underestimated. To be able to achieve that, our diet must constitute all the necessary nutritional components needed to make the above happen. These include water, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and vitamins.

Since the body is 70% water (in various forms), it is undoubtedly the most important nutrient that it needs. The various organs, tissues and cells in the body function to their optimum when the body is fully hydrated. Because the body loses water through perspiration and other activities, it's important to replenish water lost through dehydration by drinking lots of it. The recommended water intake is 8 glasses daily but the key is to drink as much as possible and not to be obsessed with the so called benchmark. Apart from drinking water in its natural form, it can be found in fruits such as watermelon and apples.

\"balance Diet\"

Another nutritional component the body needs is proteins. They can be found in foods such as meat, eggs, fish, and beans. Proteins releases a chemical called amino acids which enables the body to build and repair tissues. Proteins also assists in the building of muscles hence making them strong and healthy. Adequate proteins in the body also ensure the production of Red Blood Cells and the proper growth of hair on the head and body.

A Balanced Diet - The Key Nutritional Components

Carbohydrates and Fat are also components of a well-balanced diet. They provide the body with energy for optimum functionality during daily activities. When there is too much carbohydrates in our daily food intake, the body stores the excess as fat which are then released during a period of hyper-activity. If there isn't enough activity such as exercises to "burn" or get rid of the excess fat, the result can be obesity and that can lead to other diseases and illness. It's therefore important to regulate our carbohydrate and fat intake and exercise regularly so that we maintain a lean and healthy body.

Other nutritional components that must be present in our diet are vitamins and minerals. They assist in maintaining the right balance of chemicals that the body needs to function properly. They can be obtained in foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk and greens. Minerals such as iron and thiamine assists in the proper digestion of foods for efficient body metabolism. Where there is insufficient supply of vitamins and minerals from natural foods, supplements are recommended to make up for the short falls. To ensure the intake of the right type and amounts, let your doctor recommend the appropriate ones.

Remember, the key is BALANCE, hence the term balanced diet. Too much or too little of each nutritional component will result in an unhealthy body and the consequences can be disastrous. The combination of a healthy diet plan and a good exercise regime is the right recipe for a healthy body and life.

5 Simple Tips to Looking Good

Most of us are conscious of how we look. This may be because we do not want to be a subject of anybody's scrutiny. Another is that we want to be confident in what we do. Others would say that they owe it to themselves.

Taking care of ourselves is a way of life. We want to enhance the beauty we already have and work on some liabilities. As mentioned above, we owe it to ourselves. We cannot expect others to treat us well if we do not take care of it, right.

\"balance Diet\"

Looking good does not have to be expensive. You can take care of yourself from head to toe without getting broke. We do not have to become celebrities to look and feel good: although that can be a great experience.

5 Simple Tips to Looking Good

Here are some helpful tips to look and feel good:

1.       Start with your hair. A good hair day is a great day, so make sure you have a good one on your head. You can style it occasionally. Investing on hair styling devices is good. When you want to style your hair, you will not need to go to a salon and pay someone to do your hair. Choose a flexible tool. The 1 inch curling iron is a good choice. You can make small and large swirls with it. With a little touch of creativity, your hairstyle will go a long way.

2.       Take care of your skin. This does not mean that you have to go to expensive skin treatment regularly. You can take care of it by wearing sun block every time you expose yourself under the heat of the sun. Wear lotion to avoid it from drying. Be informed about what you can do to take care of the type of skin you have.

3.       Eat healthy. When you have a balance diet, it shows. This makes you feel good inside and this feeling radiates to your appearance. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and avoid those that have plenty of preservatives.

4.       Choose your clothes well. This does not mean that you have to dress the way models do. Welcome the suggestions of others because most of the time, how you perceive yourself is different from how others see you. Do not be afraid to try new things as well; further, do not force yourself into wearing something that will not look good on you.

5.       Be nice. This is the most effective way to look good, if you are nice to other people, they will appreciate you no matter how you look. They will neither remember if you had your hair styled with the 1 inch curling iron nor mind if your shoes matched your dress. They will only remember how you were with them.

It is important for anyone to look good. Having a well styled hair and smooth skin will surely add up to your self-esteem. It is also important to have a healthy diet in looking good. If you are healthy, you will have a natural glow and will always feel good inside. Having a nice set of clothes on will also do the trick, but the simplest most important way to look good is to have a positive attitude towards other people.

Nothing, not even all the minerals and vitamins in vegetables are as beneficial as the chlorophyll.

Some Steps To Take

The following are just some of the things that are being suggested based on the research into eczema and other skin problems. If you decide to try drinking wheat grass juice you will want to be taking in enough of it to notice the benefits. You will want to be taking at least one shot per day but no more then four each day. Alkaline Breakfast Ideas

The alkaline diet advocates eating alkaline and acid foods in a ratio of 4:1. According to advocates of the diet, this promotes the best pH balance within the body.

Having followed this dietary protocol for two months I certainly agree that it benefits overall health and well being. The alkaline diet is very close to what most people would simply regard as a healthy diet. The acid/alkaline terminology is one possible explanation as to why increasing alkaline foods in our diet is a good thing.

\"balance Diet\"

There is contradictory information regarding what is and isn't an acid food. It may not be 100% accurate to believe that all fruit and vegetables are alkaline foods while almost everything else is an acid food. However it is a straight forward guideline to follow. The alkaline diet is not specifically a vegetarian or vegan diet. It simply advocates increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables in our diet.

Alkaline Breakfast Ideas

Eating an alkaline breakfast is an excellent way to start the day getting plenty of nutrition as well as giving your body an alkaline boost. If we take our definition of alkaline foods to be fruit and vegetables, an alkaline breakfast is a breakfast loaded with fruit and veg.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 report recommends 9 servings of fruit and vegetables per day. An alkaline breakfast puts you well on your way to reaching this target. 9 servings may seem like quite a high number. When I started my alkaline diet, my aim was 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. The best way in my opinion to greatly increase your consumption is to make your own fruit and vegetable juices. Two juices a day with a minimum of 3 pieces of fruit and vegetables gives you a minimum of 6 servings. Then it's easy to reach double figures with a couple of bits of fruit and some vegetables at meal times.

Here are a few examples of alkaline breakfasts:

  • Carrot (3) and ginger juice followed by a banana or two.
  • Grapefruit (1 or 2) and a large glass of water.
  • Apple (1 or 2), spinach (20+ stalks) and ginger juice with scrambled egg whites.

Even without a fruit and vegetable juicer it is easy to eat an alkaline breakfast. One option is to grate a couple of carrots and add a squeeze of lemon juice.

As a transition to an alkaline diet, starting with just one meal is an easy way to go. I started with breakfast and as I began to feel the benefits, particularly in my energy levels, I gradually increased the amount of fruit and vegetables in my other meals.

If you are keen to eat more healthily and improve your physical well being, from personal experience, I recommend starting the day with an alkaline breakfast.

Low Carb Diets Vs Low Fat Diets - An In-Depth Comparison of the Pros and Cons

Thanks to increasing instances of people in developed western nations falling prey to obesity, diets like low fat diets and low carb diets have become very popular. But before selecting any particular type of diet you need to do a comparative study of low carb diets vs. low fat diets and acquaint yourself with the pros and cons of each.

Low fat diet

\"balance Diet\"

This type of diet tries to eliminate all sorts of fatty food and food items rich in fat that may lead to obesity like elimination of butter, cream, dairy products, peanut butter, nuts, junk food, oily fatty calorie laden food etc.

Low Carb Diets Vs Low Fat Diets - An In-Depth Comparison of the Pros and Cons

Advantages

It definitely promotes weight loss.
It does not increase insulin content.
The intake of calorie is lowered.
Cholesterol levels are brought down.
Bad fats are eliminated.

It minimizes the risk of obesity related diseases like heart diseases, cardiac arrest, strokes, blockage of vessels etc.

Makes the skin smooth, oil free and flawless and prevents acne and pimples.
It also diminishes the mortality rate due to sudden heart diseases.

Leads to easy digestion.

Disadvantages

Restricting intake of calorie to 10% fat content can be very difficult.
It dries out the skin completely, makes it chapped, rough and wrinkled quickly and the skin also loses all natural glow.

Experts' verdict

In a low carb diets vs. low fat diets match, the latter tends to create less impact than the former.

Low carb diet

It involves reducing or cutting out the intake of food items rich in carbohydrates and starch and is recommended for people who are obese or have contracted hyper insulinemia.

Pros

The blood pressure is lowered.

The lipid profile of the blood is improved leading to low cholesterol levels.
It lowers the insulin.

The blood sugar levels are also stabilized thus making it an ideal diet for diabetics.

It triggers weight loss in a sustained manner.

Cons

Most varieties of fruits are cut out from this diet thus increasing chances of nutrition deficiency.

Regular mineral and vitamin supplements have to be taken to replenish the lack of nutrition.

Fiber supplements have to be taken as well to compensate for the loss of dietary fiber.

There are various long term and short term side effects like bad breath, constipation, hair loss, cramps, fatigue, lethargy, lack of physical and mental energy, reduced thinking, reasoning, analytical abilities, slow working of the brain, dizziness etc.

Thus both have their pros and cons but in a low carb diets vs. low fat diets comparison, the former has always triggered more weight loss than the latter.

Low Carb Diets Vs Low Fat Diets - An In-Depth Comparison of the Pros and Cons

A healthy diet is essential for the overall well being and proper function of the body's daily routine. Eating healthy is not just about eating the right kinds of food but also balancing the types of food and nutrients you are eating. When you balance your diet it is easier to keep your blood sugar stabilized so you don't end up with energy crashes during your day or sudden strikes of hunger. This is where many diets fail. Often they will lack a particular nutrient that is essential for your body to properly function and that is needed for effective, long-term weight loss. The three biggest nutrients that are important to balance include protein, carbohydrates, and fat.

Protein is important for growth and reparation of muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, hair, nails, and skin. The highest source of protein is from meat and dairy products such as cheese, milk, eggs and all kinds of meats. Opt for lowfat dairy products, egg whites, and lean meats such as grilled chicken, baked fish, and lean ground turkey breast whenever possible so that you are also cutting out the unhealthy fats. Protein should make up about 30% of your daily calories and is important to helping you feel fuller longer.

\"balance Diet\"

Carbohydrates (carbs) are what your body uses for the energy it needs, like a car needs gasoline. Without carbs your body won't have the fuel it needs to keep going. These include starches and sugars found in foods such as rice, pasta, fruit, potatoes, bread and cereal. Carbs should make up about 50-55% of your daily calories and you should never go to low for too long or you may start to notice the negative side effects of fatigue and irritability. Ultimately, a low carb diet is a hard one to maintain and unhealthy for the body, so make sure you are getting those necessary carbs from whole grain products and fresh produce.

Balance Your Diet - Protein, Fat, and Carbs

Fats are also essential for the body; however, not all fats are created equal. Saturated and trans fats are not one in which you want to indulge. Saturated fats are those found in animal products such as dairy and fatty meats. They are the artery clogging fats to avoid. Trans fats are manmade and found in a variety of foods such as margarine, cookies, and crackers. Trans fats should be avoided completely. On the other hand healthy fats can be found in nuts, olive oil, flaxseeds, avocados and fish. These fats are beneficial to your body. When looking at food labels these are the monosaturated, polyunsaturated, and omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are necessary for the body and healthy in the right amounts. Fats should make up about 15-20% of your daily calories and should come from healthy sources as much as possible.

So it's important to balance your diet with the right amounts and kinds of protein, carbs, and fat so the body has all the nutrients and energy it needs. When the body is in balance it will be much easier to maintain a healthy eating regimen and ultimately lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Too much of any of these will turn to fat so it's important not to go overboard in any one area.

The Benefits Of A Balanced Diet And A Healthier Lifestyle

The key to following a balanced diet and living a healthier lifestyle is to keep an eye on the sizes of the portions that you are eating and the types of food that you eat. Making small changes to the types of food that you eat and having a varied diet is the key fact to slowly changing your diet to a more balanced one.

The basis to a well balanced diet is simple just begin to include pasta, bread, rice and cereal. The recommended portion of whole grains that should be included in your daily diet is around three servings but of course this is only a very rough guide. You also need to include plenty of fruit and veg in it because this will ensure that you are getting the essential vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. When it comes to fruit and veg then the recommended daily allowance is at least 5 portions and of course you should vary the type of fruit that you eat.

\"balance Diet\"

There are many benefits to changing your diet and eating a more balanced diet. Of course the type of food that you eat and the portion sizes go a long way to losing weight. However this is just one reason for eating like this. If you want your body to remain healthy then you have to make sure that you give it all the nutrients it needs. Nutrients are essential if you are to avoid deficiencies.

The Benefits Of A Balanced Diet And A Healthier Lifestyle

The types of food you eat will also help your body to keep up its immune system and also prevents certain illnesses. They can help to prevent heart disease and some types of cancer and also go a long way to controlling such as diabetes and lowering high blood pressure. If you suffer from either high blood pressure or diabetes then controlling your diet and eating it can help enormously when it comes to reducing the signs and symptoms of illness.

While there are many foods that you should include in a well balanced diet there are also certain foods which you should cut out. Fatty foods, foods which contain a high content of salt or sugar should be avoided as should foods with additives in them. Essentially it needs controlling when it comes to the amount of trans-fat and saturated fats that you eat. You also need to keep under control the amount of cholesterol and meat products you eat although some meat should be included in the diet.

The inclusion of plenty of fruit and veg in your diet is essential, at least 5 portions and along with this introduce low fat dairy products. Some types of fats are also needed in a well balanced diet and these should come from vegetable oils, fish, nuts, poultry and lentils. One way of ensuring that you know what you are eating and to determine how much nutrients and vitamins along with the calories you are getting is to read the packaging on ready meals. Packaging now has to meet strict requirements by listing the amount of fat, salt, calories and ingredients in easy to understand terms. This makes it so much easier to determine and learn about portion sizes and the nutrients in the food you are eating.

Balanced Diet For The Elderly - Nutritional Needs Of The Aged

Nutrition and healthy eating for the elderly depends upon several factors. The bodies of the elderly have undergone a number of changes. Bones and muscles have given way to fat because of the inactive condition of hormones.

Several factors have an effect of the health and well being of the elderly. Here is some nutritional information that will be of great help to you irrespective of your age.

\"balance Diet\"

Water

Balanced Diet For The Elderly - Nutritional Needs Of The Aged

The body's water content decreases as its becomes older, which is reason why the elderly often suffer from dehydration. The elderly should bear this point in mind and regularly drink at least an ounce of water for every 2.2 pounds of body weight.

Protein

Protein is essential for the elderly. They need it to maintain a healthy immune system and to prevent muscles from wasting away. At the same time, they do not need that much of energy. Foods such as eggs, chicken, meat, and fish, which are low-fat sources of proteins, are very much essential for the elderly.

Carbohydrates and Fiber

The entire body obtains its energy from carbohydrates. Bread, pasta, cereals, and other grains are rich in carbohydrates. You can prevent constipation by taking a diet that is rich in water and fiber.

Fat

The diet of older people should be low in fat, not fat free. You can limit your fat intake by including lean meat and low-fat diary products. As far as possible, do not fry your food in oil.

Iron

Iron deficiency is common among elderly people who do not eat much. Such people should eat plenty of breakfast cereal or red meat.

Zinc

Elderly bodies find it difficult to assimilate zinc. You should take fish, poultry, and meat in order to satisfy the zinc requirements of your body.

Calcium

Most elderly people hardly get enough of calcium. The elderly require at least 1,500 mg of calcium per day.

Many of the elderly avoid drinking milk out of fear that it might upset their digestive processes. If you are averse to milk, you could use nonfat milk powder instead of milk. You can also obtain the calcium you require from foods such as low-fat cheese, broccoli, and yogurt.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is usually absorbed by an intrinsic factor in the stomach. Many of the elderly suffer from Vitamin B12 deficiency because they suffer from atrophic gastritis, a medical condition characterized by inflammation of the walls of the stomach, growth of bacteria, and lack of the intrinsic factor that is responsible for the absorption of this vitamin into the system.

The elderly need each of the above nutritive elements to keep themselves in a healthy condition. The elderly should be as active as possible and take a good balanced diet. The elderly body may not be what it once used to be; this does not mean you have a reason to neglect it. You should take enough nutrition to enjoy a long and healthy life.

Nine Health Benefits of a Well Balanced Diet

The obvious benefits of a well balanced diet are associated  with the benefits to our health. It is important to eat a wide variety of different foods within the five main food groups and also to know why eating these foods will be of such benefit to your health. Before we look at the benefits of your diet lets look at the foods you should be eating.

The five main food groups are:-

\"balance Diet\"

Carbohydrates - bread, cereals, potatoes etc - these are low in fat and should make up around one third of your diet. However, try and avoid the white version of these foods and go for the wholemeal or wholegrain.

Nine Health Benefits of a Well Balanced Diet

Proteins - meat, poultry, fish etc - eating these foods in smaller portions will provide your body with the necessary proteins your body requires. Also, make sure you trim any fat off meat before you cook it and watch your method of cooking these foods. Grilling, poaching or steaming is much more healthy than frying.

Dairy products - eating dairy products will give your body calcium which is important for your bones. Try using low fat products such as skimmed milk and low fat yoghurts.

Fruit and vegetables - these are full of vitamins and nutrients and are high in fiber but low in fat and calories. You should look to eat at least five portions of these per day.

Fats and sugars - Eating these foods in limited amounts can be good for boosting energy but be careful about your intake especially with cakes, fizzy juice and sweets.

Other things to consider in your balanced diet should be to drink less alcohol as this has many calories and no health benefits, reduce your salt intake as most foods contain salt before any is added during cooking and drink between 6-8 glasses of water per day.

It is also important to read the labels and packaging on foods and understand the terms used. This makes it easier to determine and learn about portion sizes and the nutrients you are eating.   Now you have established what you should be eating you can start to enjoy the benefits of a well balanced diet.

You will reduce the development of  long term illnesses

The risk of heart disease can  be reduced.

You will become fitter and more active.

You could prevent the onset of certain types of cancer.

You can control your blood sugars  more easily

You can help lower blood pressure.

The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet - Pros and Cons

The acid alkaline balance diet is often termed the acid alkaline diet, and sometimes it is simply described as the alkaline diet. Nevertheless, although there are a number of different names for this popular approach to eating, the acid alkaline balance diet may be the most suitable one. That is because the core fact at the heart of this diet is that you should eat in a way that helps you to achieve a balanced internal pH.

It is true that some fad diets that you may have seen tell you to eat exclusively alkalizing foods. In actuality, however, eating only alkaline-producing foods is both unhealthy and impractical.

\"balance Diet\"

To begin with, a 100 percent alkalizing diet would be pretty boring. Not only would poultry, fish, and dairy products be entirely off limits, but so would beans, tomatoes, and even whole-grain breads.

The Acid Alkaline Balance Diet - Pros and Cons

A second issue with such a diet is that you would miss out on important nutrients which are found in some acidifying foods. For example, tomatoes are high in cancer-fighting lycopene. And at least one study shows that prunes may guard against osteoporosis.

As its name suggests, the goal of the acid alkaline balance diet is not to go to an extreme of alkalinity. Since this is the case, you don't need to eat only alkalizing foods in order to create an ideal acid-alkaline balance.

But you probably do need to eat many more alkalizing foods, and fewer acidifying ones. Whether you eat this food or that food is not as important as the overall ratio of acidifying to alkaline-forming components in your diet.

This is to say that if you completely remove sugar and acidifying beverages like soft drinks, you have a little more margin for error, which means that you can eat a little more meat and dairy products without your body becoming too acidic. To give you another example, if you choose to eat poultry, you should compensate by eating less dairy, and so on.

There is no one right answer for how to use your "budget" of acidifying foods, but in general it is always a good idea to emphasize foods that are low in calories and rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and other health-giving nutrients.

The bottom line, however, is that no matter what kind of diet you currently have, you can start making simple changes to create a healthier acid alkaline balance.
